Differences Between Long-Term and Short-Term Addiction Treatment Programs*

Traditional rehab for drug and alcohol addiction comes in the form of a 28-day or 30-day program. Programs typically include medically supervised detox, therapy and education on addiction and sobriety.

Extended addiction treatment programs — 90 days or longer — are becoming more popular due to evidence-based studies showing relapse to be less likely the longer the patient is in formal rehab.

Shorter programs are often less expensive, but long-term programs are better able to help people address the deep-seated roots of addiction in order to achieve long-term sobriety and avoidance of relapse. Therefore, a longer program could end up being more cost effective if it eliminates the patient’s need for return trips to rehab.
